Josh Allen Dealt with Injury More than He Revealed

Bills quarterback Josh Allen managed to keep his pain under wraps. Recently, he shared with reporters that he underwent surgery for a broken bone in his right foot. This revelation came as quite a surprise, especially since he showed up on crutches at Joe Brady’s first press conference as the new head coach.

“Honestly, I’ll do whatever it takes to play this week,” Allen mentioned, expressing his determination despite the setback.

The fact that Allen needed surgery caught everyone off guard. There hadn’t been any hints during the offseason that he was dealing with such a serious issue, and he confirmed that the procedure happened in Birmingham, Alabama.

Caught on camera with crutches, Allen was observed walking around the Bills’ facility. Brandon Beane, now Buffalo’s director of football operations, commented that “Josh went over and fixed his leg,” referring to the quarterback’s earlier injury.

At 29, Allen has been a staple for the Bills, starting 122 consecutive regular-season games since 2018. He’s earned a reputation for his toughness in the league.

He stated that the recent injury stemmed from an old issue that flared up during a game against the Browns in Week 16. After that encounter, he played in a loss to the Eagles, but X-rays thankfully came back negative.

Post-game, he downplayed the impact of the injury on his performance, although former coach Sean McDermott admitted grappling with concerns about his star player’s health, especially as playoffs were approaching. “You have to consider how critical he is for us, but he’s fiercely competitive. We need to ensure he stays healthy,” McDermott shared.

Allen was listed on the injury report for foot issues during the last few weeks of the season and even picked up additional ailments, including knee and right finger injuries as they progressed into the playoffs.

Amidst all of this, the situation grew more complex with the team’s choice to elevate Brady after letting McDermott go. Allen was clearly balancing a lot, physically and mentally.
