NBA Finals Return to Madison Square Garden After 27 Years
The NBA Finals are set to return to Madison Square Garden for the first time in nearly three decades, a noteworthy event that has sparked discussions about ticket prices and the Knicks’ performance against the San Antonio Spurs.
One of the Knicks’ starters, Josh Hart, expressed his frustration regarding the steep costs of admission, labeling it “ridiculous” to pay thousands for a seat in the iconic arena.
Before Game 3 tipped off, Hart spoke with reporters about the ticket prices for the upcoming games. “I just wish the ticket prices weren’t so high,” he remarked. “A lot of fans who have been eagerly waiting for this moment unfortunately can’t get into the building.” He noted that the cheapest tickets are priced around $7,000 to $8,000, which he finds quite strange.
Game 3 between the Knicks and Spurs is projected to potentially be the most expensive sporting event on record. Following the Knicks’ narrow 105-104 win in Game 2, ticket prices surged on the secondary market, hitting around $10,000 over the weekend.
As tickets became increasingly scarce, some speculated that President Donald Trump’s attendance at Game 3 might have impacted ticket availability. The Knicks have announced increased security measures for fans, who must arrive approximately two hours before the game for screening.
Knicks center Mitchell Robinson seems enthusiastic about the chance to play in front of the President, commenting on the heightened security, which may resemble TSA lines at airports.
Trump was also questioned about the high ticket prices and had a different viewpoint from Hart’s. “They can watch it on TV,” he said while on Air Force One. “Watching it on TV is half free in a way. That’s how life goes.”
This upcoming game marks Trump’s first major sporting event since starting his second term as president.
The Knicks are in a favorable position, riding a 13-game winning streak and aiming to sweep the best-of-seven series against the Spurs. Game 4 will carry significant implications, potentially deciding the championship, and ticket prices seem to reflect this urgency.
As of Sunday night, the average ticket price for Game 3 was already around $10,097, with some reaching highs of $110,964.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also commented on the pricing, acknowledging the disappointment that more fans can’t attend while recognizing the financial dynamics at play, given the historic context for the Knicks.
Despite the hype around who’s sitting courtside, players like Hart, Jalen Brunson, and Karl-Anthony Towns are staying focused on the game. With the sentiment echoing what the late Kobe Bryant said during his own Finals run, they realize that their mission is far from over.
On the other hand, the Spurs, led by Victor Wembanyama, are keen on making this series last longer than their previous Finals appearance, which wrapped up in just five games.
The matchup is set to take place Monday night at 8:30 PM ET, promising to be a thrilling contest for fans and players alike.
