Josh Hawley Begins Investigation into Financing of Los Angeles Riots

Investigation into Los Angeles Riots Funding Announced by Sen. Josh Hawley

Senator Josh Hawley from Missouri revealed on Wednesday that he is initiating an investigation into the financial backing related to the recent riots in Los Angeles, California.

Hawley, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism, reached out to Angelica Salas, the executive director of the Coalition of Humanitarian Immigration Rights, regarding her organization’s involvement in funding and supporting the protests and riots that have occurred in Los Angeles in recent weeks.

As part of his role on the Judiciary Committee, Hawley, along with Senate Republicans, possesses the authority to delve into these allegations.

In his letter, Hawley stated:

While peaceful protests are a fundamental aspect of American democracy, the recent demonstrations have devolved into the actions of lawless mobs. These activities disrupted federal law enforcement, endangered public safety, and undermined the rule of law. This level of lawlessness is intolerable. It must come to an end.

There are credible reports indicating that your organization has provided logistical and financial support to individuals involved in these disruptive actions. Let’s be clear: funding civil unrest is not protected speech; it facilitates and contributes to criminal activity. Therefore, any continued involvement in the organizing, funding, or promotion of these unlawful activities needs to cease immediately.

In response to President Donald Trump’s assertion that she and Governor Gavin Newsom are “paid troublemakers,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass dismissed the claims as “absolutely ridiculous.”

Bass responded, saying, “It’s completely absurd for either myself or the governor to be accused of forming or shaping any group against the vandalism and violence occurring in our city. I don’t believe he’s been listening to my comments or press conferences. It’s clear that what’s happening on our streets is unacceptable. If anyone commits a criminal act, they will be arrested and prosecuted.”

Hawley has instructed the Coalition of Humanitarian Immigration Rights to retain all communications, financial documents, grants, and other records related to its participation in the protests. He warned that failure to comply could lead to further actions by the subcommittee, potentially including referrals for criminal investigations.
