Trump defeated Harris in North Carolina, which has 16 electoral votes, by about 3 points, keeping the state in the red. In 2020, he also won the Tar Heel State, becoming the fourth Republican in history to carry the state without being elected president. He also won in 2016, defeating former Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
But Stein, who won last month's gubernatorial race against Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R), said North Carolinians are “receptive to something very positive.” He called his victory over Robinson “the strongest victory for a Democratic gubernatorial candidate in 44 years.”
“It wasn't just a victory for us,” he said, adding that Democrats won positions such as secretary of state, attorney general, lieutenant governor and superintendent of public instruction.
“It was a disappointing night for Democrats across the country, but North Carolina was a bright spot. We are proud of what we accomplished here,” Stein said.
Mr. Stein will become North Carolina's first Jewish governor and will succeed incumbent Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper, who is term-limited.
