The 151st Kentucky Derby is set for Saturday, May 3rd, at the iconic Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Exciting, right?
With post-time slated for 6:57 PM ET, the race will feature 20 horses this year.
This year’s standout is No. 8, Journalism, currently the 3-1 favorite according to the morning line. However, after some early action, those odds drifted a bit to 7-2, especially with a few horses dropping out.
Trained by Michael McCarthy, Journalism has had an impressive record, winning four out of five career races and placing in all of them. He comes into the Derby with a four-race winning streak and really lit up the Santa Anita Derby on April 5th.
As long as nothing unexpected happens, it seems likely Journalism will be a strong contender on Saturday.
Following closely is No. 18, Sovereignty, at 9-1, with Sandman at 5-1 in the 17th slot but he’s not the only one grabbing attention.
A horse to keep an eye on is No. 21, Baeza, who is at 21-1. Originally set to be an alternate, Baeza got into the race after another horse trained by Bob Baffert, No. 4 Rodriguez, was sidelined due to an injury.
After seeing Baeza in action during the Santa Anita Derby, many are seriously considering him as a dark horse candidate. So, yeah, he might just surprise some folks on Saturday.
Another contender from Baffert is No. 1, Citizen Bull, listed at 14-1.
This Kentucky Derby is particularly noteworthy for Baffert since he returns after a three-year suspension stemming from a positive test for banned substances in his horse, Medina Spirit, following the Rose Run in 2021.
