Journalist criticized online for false claim connecting Trump to transgender shooter

Media Scrutiny After ABC News Claims about Trans Shooting

On Wednesday, media critics took aim at ABC News after reporters made claims regarding the motivations behind a shooting incident in Minneapolis, allegedly carried out by a transgender individual.

As of now, investigators haven’t confirmed what drove Robin Westman, who reportedly took his own life after shooting two children, aged 8 and 10, at a Catholic Church.

Aaron Katelski, in his report, noted that Westman had “Trump” written on his firearm but didn’t mention that the full inscription included the phrase “Kill Donald Trump” alongside his name.

“Robin Westman, 23, was able to leave behind material that police are now working to understand,” Katelski said. He added that there were “crude illustrations of the church” and images of weapons featuring various writings, including names of past shooters, critiques of Israel, and mentions of President Trump.

“There are also statements that are racially slanderous and nihilistic,” he continued. Katelski’s remarks were later posted on social media, leading to a rapid spread of criticism as many accused the reporters of implying a connection between the shooter and right-wing ideologies.

Another reporter, Olivia Rondeau, voiced her concerns, stating, “To mention his gun and just say ‘Trump’s name was written on it’ is misleading without sharing the full context.” She emphasized the importance of providing a complete picture.

“It leaves enough ambiguity to lead people to believe it was a right-wing attack,” said another social media user. Critics argued that Katelski’s comments hinted at a nonexistent relationship between the shooter and Donald Trump.

“Why is it hard for you to acknowledge that the shooter explicitly wanted to harm the president?” a critic challenged Katelski directly on social media.

In contrast, some have pointed out the lack of proactive steps taken, citing that a Catholic school had requested increased security prior to the tragic shooting, which had gone unaddressed.

The situation continues to unfold, with various reactions surfacing across different platforms.
