Somaliland Welcomes Trump’s Acknowledgment
The Republic of Somaliland expressed appreciation for President Donald Trump’s recent comments recognizing it as a “distinct country,” separate from Somalia.
In a press statement, Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation noted that the region possesses its own internationally recognized borders, a constitution, a democratically elected government, and foreign relations. This statement followed Trump’s remarks at a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, where he referred to Somaliland as “a totally different country” from Somalia.
“The Government of the Republic of Somaliland warmly welcomes US President Donald J. Trump’s acknowledgement of our nation as a distinct country,” the Ministry stated. “His comments affirm a longstanding reality: Somaliland has its own internationally defined borders, which were inherited at independence in line with the African Union’s principles regarding respect for borders existing at that time.”
Moreover, the statement emphasized that Somaliland has been self-governing for over thirty years, maintaining its own constitution and government.
The press release went on to highlight Somaliland’s commitment to peaceful relations with its neighbors, expressing a dedication to resolving any differences through respectful dialogue.
“We are grateful to President Trump for acknowledging the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Somaliland,” the statement said. “This affirmation complements the formal recognition we have received from Israel and our established partnership with Taiwan. We look forward to collaborating with President Trump’s Administration to enhance constructive engagement.”
Following Trump’s remarks, Somaliland President Abdiraham Mohamed Abdullahi shared his thoughts with Breitbart News, calling Trump a “great man” who could further historic achievements by recognizing Somaliland as its own entity.
“I believe President Trump is indeed a great man,” Abdullahi commented. “He has created history and could make even more by officially recognizing Somaliland, which is ready to support the fight against terrorism, piracy, marine-security issues, and promote safer trade routes.”
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) also reacted to Trump’s acknowledgment, asserting that it is long overdue for the United States to grant formal recognition to Somaliland.
“President Trump is exactly right,” Cruz wrote in a post on X. “Somaliland is not Somalia. It’s well past time for the United States to formally recognize it.”
Additionally, video footage shared on X showed the U.S. flag prominently displayed on a building in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, indicating a celebration of Trump’s remarks.
