Juan Soto’s Remarkable Play in World Baseball Classic
Juan Soto is making a habit of visiting home plate with flair.
During the Dominican Republic’s impressive 10-0 win against South Korea in the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals on Friday, Soto executed a remarkable swim move to evade the catcher at home plate.
It all happened in the third inning when his teammate, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., hit a ball into right-center field. This led to a dramatic situation as Soto sprinted from first base, aiming to score.
Even though the ball arrived at home plate well before he did, Soto managed to dodge the tag attempt by catcher Park Dong-won. In a split second, he was ruled safe at home, marking the Dominican Republic’s fourth run of the evening.
Guerrero had set the tone for the game earlier, hitting a double to left field in the second inning off infielder Junior Caminero and showcasing some impressive sliding techniques.
When it looked like the game might take a turn for the worse, the first baseman opted to leap instead of slide, soaring over the tag to score the game’s opening point.
The winner of Friday’s matchup is set to face the victor of the Team USA vs. Team Canada game in the semifinals this Sunday.
The Dominican Republic, eyeing its second WBC title, has been energized throughout the tournament, capturing attention for their spirited performances during the pool play.
Fernando Tatis Jr. shared his thoughts, expressing that he feels he’s “the loudest” player on the team, but acknowledged the vibrant energy all around him. “We have some really good candidates on our team,” he said. “But if I had to choose, it’s definitely Junior Caminero who stands out as being the loudest and most enjoyable because it’s something fresh.”
Soto weighed in on the team dynamics, suggesting their success stems from a simple concept—enjoying the game. “It’s about being outside and having fun,” he explained. “We respect the game, of course, but having fun is essential. I think that’s when you perform your best.” He added, “When you stop worrying and just enjoy the game, it makes a world of difference for every player.”
