Mets’ Big Night Highlighted by Soto’s Performance
Juan Soto made a standout contribution in his first season with the Mets, hitting a remarkable 408-foot home run to center field during Friday night’s game. This was a key moment in the Mets’ explosive inning, which saw them score three runs, bringing Soto’s total to 42 homers for the season. The crowd couldn’t help but chant “MVP” as he left his mark on the game.
The Mets defeated the Nationals 12-6, marking their fourth win in five games, which they gladly welcomed. However, they still trail the Reds by two games in the race for the NL’s final wild card spot.
Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks, who are also chasing a playoff position, played later against the Phillies. Soto’s achievement of being the franchise’s first player with both 40 home runs and 30 stolen bases is noteworthy. He reached base four times during the game, further solidifying his role as a driving force in the Mets’ offense.
While the Mets saw strong relief work from Brooks Raley, Lynn Stanek, Ryan Healthley, Tyler Rogers, and Chris Devenski, rookie starting pitcher Sproto struggled in just his third major league start. He was taken out after four innings and only 71 pitches, unable to handle the top of the Nationals’ lineup for a third time.
Errors played a crucial role in shaping the game. For instance, Dylan Crew’s misplay allowed the Mets to score first when Francisco Lindor, who led off with a single, capitalized on the miscue. The Nationals also benefited from sloppy Mets defense that led to additional runs.
In a notable moment, James Wood hit into a double play, yet his effort still resulted in two runs for the Nationals. The play was initially recorded as an error but was later credited as a two-run double. Daylen Lyle then pushed the score to 4-1 with an RBI triple.
The Mets clawed their way back, making use of another error by Crew, allowing the score to narrow to 4-2. Lindor, who walked twice, helped bring Soto to the plate, leading to an RBI single by Pete Alonso that closed the gap further.
Francisco Alvarez contributed to the offensive push, hitting a two-run double in the fourth inning. The Mets were starting to gain momentum as Soto launched a three-run homer that propelled them to an 8-4 lead.
However, the Nationals responded. Pitcher Brazobán allowed a two-run homer to CJ Abrams, slicing the Mets’ lead to 8-6. After struggling to find his rhythm, he was quickly replaced by Brooks Raley.
The Mets continued to apply pressure, bringing in another run with an RBI ground out by Marte. Jeff McNeill also helped advance the score with a single, while pinch runner Louis Sanger Acuña stole second base. Acuña later walked with the bases loaded, pushing the Mets’ lead to 10-6.
Ultimately, Nimmo’s two-run single sealed the deal for the Mets, turning the game into a dominant win.
