Giants’ Kicker Competition Heats Up

When the Giants brought Younghoe Koo onto their practice squad last week, it seemed likely he would be the go-to replacement for veteran kicker Graham Gano, who’s currently injured. But Jude McAtamney, who’s in his second year on the Giants’ practice team through the NFL International Pathways program, outperformed Koo during practice.

Special teams coordinator Michael Gobrial commented, “Jude has been with us and knows our operation a bit better. He gave us the best chance to win.” Instead of feeling overshadowed by the competition, McAtamney made a strong case for himself by successfully connecting on two field goals in a recent game against the Chargers.

“Younghoe has a wealth of experience, having played in the league for eight years,” McAtamney reflected. “I think, really, there’s a lot I can learn from him. His competitiveness pushes me to improve, and hopefully, I do the same for him.”

Now, the question hangs in the air: Will his performance earn him a spot against the Saints this week?

Koo has a record of 24 out of 30 field goals in domes throughout his career. McAtamney shared his thoughts on the dome atmosphere, “I’ve heard about it, of course—lots of noise—but I have to stick to my rhythm. I’m focusing on what I can control.”

There was a game situation where the Giants opted not to punt in favor of a 58-yard field goal attempt, which McAtamney remarked was about understanding the moment in the game.

In a lighthearted moment, he mentioned, “Honestly, I had a solid 55-yarder. It could’ve been good from 65, I think.”

Injury Updates

Andrew Thomas, who has a foot injury, returned as a limited participant in practice, which is notable since he wasn’t listed on the initial injury report. Additionally, guard Greg Van Roten was back in training after a rest day.

However, lingering injury concerns are present as key players like Tyler Nubin (groin), Jevon Holland (neck/calf), and Dane Belton (shoulder) remained limited. Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen expressed that it might come down to Sunday morning to see who is fit to play.

As for the Giants’ next steps, they could rely on special teamer Boe Blade, practice squad member Raheem Rain, or hybrid cornerback-safety Nick Jones to fill gaps.

Bowen advised, “We need to ensure we’re aware of the game plan and have contingency options in place.”

Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka mentioned that the coaching team is contemplating a creative play involving a three-yard shovel pass to tight end Theo Johnson, hinting it might echo strategies used with former players like Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.
