Judge adjourns case against NYC Mayor Adams, but does not dismiss charges yet

A US judge has decided to postpone the trial of New York Mayor Eric Adams until notice.

The decision comes days after U.S. Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove asked prosecutors to withdraw all corruption charges against the mayor.

In his motion for rejection, Bove said the legal proceedings against Adams undermine other Department of Justice priorities, including illegal immigration and violent crimes.

“The pending prosecutors have unfairly limited Mayor Adams' ability to devote full attention and resources to illegal immigration and violent crimes that escalated under the policies of the previous administration,” Bove said in his filing.

The charges against Adams remain unharmed until US District Judge Dale Ho agrees to dismiss them.

Ho has opposed the motion for rejection and appointed Attorney Paul Clement to assist in court in making decisions. He directed a legal brief to be filed on March 7th and said there will be a hearing on March 14th if necessary.

Adams will not need to appear in future hearings.

In a somewhat unusual move, Ho refuses to immediately control the bench of the Justice Department's motion for rejection on Wednesday, taking into consideration further the facts surrounding the case and the facts he characterized as “an unusual situation.” He cited the need.

“This is a very complicated situation, at least from where I'm sitting,” Ho said after the approximately 90-minute hearing.

“I'm not going to shoot him in the waist here on the bench,” he said at the end of the hearing.

It is very unusual for the US courts to not cease accusations against Adams, and the US court of appeals has never sided with a federal judge who refused to grant an opposition motion for dismissal.

According to the Justice Department, Adams was charged with five federal corruption and bribery charges in September, linked to the solicitation of contributions from illegal campaigns and allegedly receiving a gorgeous travel perk on behalf of a Turkish foreigner .

Adams pleaded not guilty to all charges last fall and vehemently denied any misconduct.

“I want to be clear with the New Yorker. I never offered – no one on my behalf – a deal of my authority as your mayor for the end of my case.

Even without a court case, the claim itself could threaten Adams' 2025 re-elect bid. Already, Adams is facing a call to step down as mayor, and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has now weighed in on reporters this week about the possibility that she will use her position to remove Adams as mayor. He said he was there.
