Judge determines Boston fraudster Brian Walshe is fit to face trial for his wife's murder

Massachusetts Judge Rules Brian Walsh Competent for Trial

A judge in Massachusetts has determined that Brian Walsh, a fraudster from the Boston area accused of killing his wife, Anna, is fit to go to trial.

Walsh appeared in court wearing a dark suit, with his hands restrained. This session wrapped up after about an hour, led by Judge Diane Frenière, who then set a trial date for December 1.

The trial was initially set for October but was postponed just before jury selection due to concerns about Walsh’s mental health. He was subsequently sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for evaluation.

Judge Frenière received a detailed report from the hospital that concluded Walsh is competent to stand trial—a finding the defense did not dispute.

In a separate decision, she rejected Walsh’s request to change the trial venue. Jury selection is anticipated to conclude by the end of next week.

To date, Anna Walsh’s body hasn’t been found. She was last seen on New Year’s Day in 2023. Prosecutors allege that her husband dismembered her at their Cohasset home and concealed her remains.

During a hearing in July, prosecutors presented two possible motives. One suggested that Brian discovered his wife was involved with another man, as he reportedly searched that man’s name on Google several times. The other motive indicated that he might have believed her disappearance could help him evade prison time related to an art fraud case, where he owes nearly $500,000.

Additionally, Anna allegedly confided in a friend shortly before her disappearance, expressing concerns that Walsh might try to avoid jail by gaining custody of their children. Notably, he stands to benefit from a $2.7 million life insurance policy on her.

Investigators uncovered digital evidence that Walsh had searched numerous times online for ways to dispose of a body. There are also reports of security footage showing him purchasing cleaning supplies at a hardware store, including a mop, goggles, and a knife. Further, remnants believed to be from Anna were reportedly found in a trash can outside his mother’s residence.

A significant detail surrounding the investigation involves a detective, Michael Proctor, previously employed by Massachusetts State Police, who has faced scrutiny over his investigative conduct concerning another high-profile case.

Brian Walsh has maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty to the charges against him.
