In a recent trial involving his parents alleged to have attempted an “honor killing” of his teenage sister, Fatima, BlazeTV host Sarah Gonzalez shared her thoughts on the case.
The verdict found 44-year-old Isan Ali not guilty of second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault. However, he was convicted of second and fourth-degree assault and illegal imprisonment.
“This trial has transcended being merely about attempted murder. With this not-guilty verdict and the evidence presented, it raises questions about how our systems have failed this girl,” noted Gonzalez, expressing her frustration.
Key evidence included video footage of the father choking his 17-year-old daughter outside Timberline High School in October 2024. This violent episode followed Fatima’s escape from home to avoid being sent to Iraq for an arranged marriage to an older man.
Witnesses observed Fatima struggling as her father suffocated her, while her boyfriend attempted to intervene but was also attacked.
Fatima’s mother, Zahura Ali, was found guilty of breaching a protective order but faced no charges of attempted murder or assault. She was present during the incident and was accused of similar attacks on her daughter.
“Crucial evidence was excluded from the trial. She had informed authorities about plans for an arranged marriage and a trip to Iraq, fearing she’d be forced to marry against her will,” Gonzalez commented. “Yet, Judge Christine Schaller blocked this from being presented. It raises concerns about the integrity of the judicial process,” she continued.
The prosecution was reportedly told that the background of the events would bias the jury. “It’s alarming that the truth could be deemed too prejudicial for the court,” Gonzalez asserted.
“Everything that led up to the attack is essential information,” she added, visibly shaken by the notion that such testimony was disregarded when it was so relevant to the case.
