Wisconsin Judge Faces Scrutiny Over Immigration Controversy
A Wisconsin judge, Hannah Dugan, has become embroiled in a serious scandal involving allegations of aiding illegal immigrants. Newly released video footage shows Dugan interacting with immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) agents, raising questions about her conduct.
This footage, obtained by Milwaukee County through a public records request, is a critical piece of evidence in the ongoing case against Dugan.
Prosecutors claim that Dugan assisted an individual named Eduardo Flores Lewis evade federal authorities. Specifically, they argue that she concealed Lewis and obstructed the investigation by escorting ICE agents to a separate door so they could speak with the Chief Judge. The April 18th video captures an ICE agent walking down the hallway, having been directed by Dugan.
In the footage, Dugan, dressed in her judicial robe, appears to be in communication with federal officials while they attempt to apprehend Lewis. Prosecutors assert that Dugan’s actions were an attempt to distract the ICE agent as Lewis sought to evade capture. The video also depicts Lewis and his legal team exiting a restricted area shortly after ICE officials leave.
Shortly after, a tweet highlighted the footage, emphasizing Dugan’s role in enabling illegal immigrants to slip away from the courthouse.
Following these events, Dugan was arrested a week later and faced charges on May 13th after a federal court found sufficient grounds to advance the case. Initially, she was accused of obstructing justice and protecting an individual from arrest, but the court’s findings may lead to additional charges.
Since her arrest, Dugan has been temporarily relieved of her duties, and her defense team has issued a brief response regarding the situation.
Meanwhile, the 30-year-old undocumented individual Dugan allegedly tried to shield is currently detained at the Dodge Detention Facility in Juneau, approximately 50 miles northwest of Milwaukee. Notably, he had previously been deported in 2013 before unlawfully re-entering the United States, according to court records.
His hearing concerning battery and domestic abuse charges is scheduled for June 18th.
