On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan ordered the release of additional documents in the case.
The documents are part of an appendix to a legal dispute over whether President Trump has sufficient immunity from prosecution.
“The asymmetric release of the accusations and related documents during early voting gives rise to the disturbing appearance of election interference,” the judge wrote in his order. did.
While there is a public interest in keeping courts out of elections, Chutkan said, “Indeed, the relief requested by the defendants risks undermining that public interest.”
“When a court withholds information to which the public has a right to access solely because of the potential political consequences of its release, that withholding itself may amount to, or appear to constitute, election interference.” she insisted.
She also said that despite the defense's requests, the court will continue to make decisions without considering politics.
“The debate about 'what needs to happen and what shouldn't happen before the election' is not relevant here,” Chutkan wrote.
