A federal judge has temporarily halted the Trump administration’s decision to revoke Harvard University’s ability to register international students.
Just hours after a lawsuit was filed by Harvard, US District Judge Allison Burrows in Boston issued a ruling, agreeing to pause the cancellation until further discussions can take place. A hearing has been set for May 29 to determine whether longer suspensions will be permitted.
In her brief order, Burrows acknowledged Harvard’s concerns.
She stated that the issuance of the temporary restraining order was warranted, considering the circumstances. The judge, previously appointed by President Biden, noted that holding off on the hearing was justified.
This action comes after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that the prestigious university, known for having a significant number of international students—27%, to be precise—would no longer be allowed to recognize these students. The DHS suggested that this situation could force many students to find a new school or potentially leave the country.
