Florida Man Barred from Accessing Classified Materials in Trump Assassination Case

Last year, a federal judge prohibited a man from viewing classified documents related to his case involving an alleged attempt to assassinate Donald Trump. Judge Eileen Cannon ruled on Friday that the United States successfully demonstrated that the relevant information was classified and that its disclosure could pose serious threats to national security.

The ruling emphasized that the U.S. had properly invoked the classified information procedure. The defendant, 59-year-old Ryan Routh, is set to represent himself in the upcoming trial. He faces accusations of trying to assassinate Trump, along with several firearm-related offenses, linked to an incident that occurred on September 15, 2024, in Florida. Routh has pleaded not guilty.

In a prior ruling, Cannon advised Routh that his court-appointed attorney would provide better defense than he could manage alone. Fox News Digital reported that Routh previously sent an unusual letter to the judge, questioning why the death penalty wasn’t an option. He also suggested a potential prisoner exchange with foreign adversaries.

In his letter, he expressed despair about life without love as he approached 60. He posed philosophical questions like, “What’s the point?” and asked why execution wasn’t permissible. Routh, in a somewhat bizarre tone, suggested that perhaps exchanging him for American hostages would create a diplomatic win for Trump—something he cheekily proposed could also benefit the judge.

On July 24, Routh appeared in court, and Cannon remains a significant figure in his ongoing legal struggles. She had previously ruled against Trump in a separate case involving confidential documents, related to the investigation of his activities at Mar-a-Lago in 2022.
