Judge Rejects Trump Administration's Bid to Halt Alligator Alcatraz Closure

Legal Battle Over Immigration Detention Center in Florida

A lawsuit has challenged the operations at immigrant detention facilities, particularly a site known as Wannial Catraz in Florida. In this ongoing legal struggle, federal judges have consistently intervened against the policies of the Trump administration.

Recently, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams, who was appointed during the Obama era, rejected a request from Trump administration officials to delay an earlier order regarding the Alligator Alcatraz facility. This ruling, issued on a Wednesday, has led to the relocation of detainees from the Florida Detention Center to different facilities, as confirmed by federal sources.

In her eight-page order, Judge Williams stated, “The defendant reiterates the same general arguments about the necessity of immigration enforcement presented during the interim injunction hearing. They fail to introduce new evidence regarding the specific risks faced by the detainee population. Should a facility be necessary at this location, the court will not revisit the flaws in the defendant’s assertions.”

The judge’s siding with environmental advocates began in early August when she issued a temporary restraining order against the expansion of Wannial Catraz, questioning if it adhered to environmental regulations. On August 21, she enforced an indefinite stop to new constructions, preventing additional detainees from entering the facility.

Despite Florida officials’ appeal against this ruling, Williams declined to lift her order, receiving criticism from the Trump administration which labeled her an “activist judge.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated, “Under President Trump’s leadership, we are rapidly advancing innovative strategies to address the deportation of criminal immigrants.” They expressed that the judge’s ruling hinders efforts to remove individuals considered threats like gang members and violent offenders, insisting the land in question had already been developed for over a decade.

In line with Judge Williams’ orders, DHS confirmed that they were complying by relocating detainees. The spokesperson assured that the administration would continue to fight vigorously to maintain the safety of American communities.

The DHS representative emphasized concerns over the current administration’s policies, arguing that, “The judge seems indifferent to the challenges posed by immigration.”

The Alcatraz Crocodile Project, initially proposed by Florida officials in June, aimed to repurpose a disused airfield in the Everglades into an immigration detention center. Concerns have arisen about the restricted movement for detainees, given that the facility is surrounded by vast marshlands and large crocodile populations.

However, the project has raised significant opposition through various lawsuits deployed by environmentalists and others critical of the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has indicated reinforcing collaboration with federal immigration officials, recently announcing intentions for a second state-operated detention center dubbed the “deportation depot.” The DHS is also coordinating with state authorities in Indiana to increase the availability of detention resources.
