Judge Rules Trump’s Military Troop Deployment to Los Angeles Illegal

A federal judge recently declared that President Trump’s deployment of military troops to Los Angeles was unlawful. Despite ongoing plans to send more military personnel to various cities, the legal ruling makes clear that this particular action overstepped legal boundaries.

Trump defended the necessity of military involvement, citing issues like violence against immigration enforcement. Critics, however, argue that this is more about establishing a militarized presence to intimidate those who oppose him.

In a notable statement, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer remarked that Trump’s actions suggest an attempt to form a “National Police Force under presidential command.” In his comprehensive ruling, Breyer referenced the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, which restricts the military’s ability to engage in domestic law enforcement, stating that the President had indeed violated this law.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta firmly opposed the troop increase in Los Angeles, calling the move not just immoral but also illegal and hazardous. He emphasized that law enforcement within Californian borders should fall to local authorities, not the military.

Following this ruling, the Trump administration sent troops to Washington, D.C., ostensibly to combat crime. While this action sparked outrage among liberal lawmakers, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser acknowledged that military support was beneficial for local police efforts.

When questioned about the deployment, Trump dismissed the judge’s order, referring to him as a “radical left judge.” He maintained that the administration was within its rights to retain 300 troops in Los Angeles.
