Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that New York Judge Juan Marchan should take former President Donald Trump’s comments about being incarcerated into account when imposing his sentence.
“I think it’s going to be hard for the American people to accept. At some point there’s going to be a breaking point,” Trump said Sunday on Fox News Channel’s “Fox and Friends Weekend.”
Guest host Casey Hunt asked, “Given that a sentence is likely coming, just days before the start of the convention and months before he becomes the Republican nominee in November, do you believe Donald Trump would be a danger to the country if he were sentenced to prison?”
Schiff said, “No, I don’t think it’s a danger to the country. Trump called for massive protests outside the courthouse which didn’t happen. But I still think this is what Donald Trump is going for. This is basically a threat that if he is put in jail, it will encourage his supporters to rise up. And we saw the very horrific results of that on January 6th. So I don’t think the public will take up that call. I hope we can learn something from the terrible experience of January 6th.”
He added, “It’s very clear what Donald Trump is suggesting here, and I think that’s something the judge needs to consider. Rather than being intimidated by this threat, the further evidence is that not only does this defendant not accept responsibility, he’s willing to put people at risk, and the judge should consider that, just as he could potentially violate a gag order and put witnesses, jurors, himself and his family at risk.”
