New Mexico judge threw out In a surprising development on Friday, Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.
Baldwin had been charged with murder in a shooting on the set of his film “Lust,” which left 42-year-old cinematographer Halina Hutchins dead and director Joel Souza wounded in October 2021. Baldwin maintained his innocence and at one point claimed he did not pull the trigger.
“The state bears significant responsibility for failing to provide discovery to the defendant.”
Baldwin’s defense team argued that the prosecution was withholding new evidence by not turning it over to the defense: a bullet that was allegedly connected to the murder.
Lead prosecutor Kari Morrissey testified that she believed the bullet had no evidentiary value, but the judge disagreed.
“The state bears great responsibility for not providing discovery to the defendant,” Sommer said. “The dismissal on appeal is warranted.”
Baldwin broke down in tears after Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer imposed the sentence.
No new charges will be filed against Baldwin.
Baldwin could have faced up to 18 months in prison if convicted.
This is breaking news and will be updated with additional information.
