Julia Letlow Announces Senate Candidacy

Rep. Julia Letlow (R-Louisiana) declared her intention to run for the Senate on Tuesday, positioning herself against Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana) with backing from former President Donald Trump.

In her announcement, Letlow expressed gratitude for Trump’s support, stating, “With the encouragement of President Donald Trump, I am honored to share that I am officially announcing my candidacy for United States Senate.” She also mentioned Cassidy during a local event on Tuesday.

Letlow shared a video announcement on X, emphasizing her commitment to a safer and stronger future for the next generation. She declared, “Today, I am announcing my candidacy for the United States Senate. Louisiana deserves a staunchly conservative senator. I am proud to have President Trump’s support. Let’s go!”

Earlier, Letlow ran for the House of Representatives following the passing of her husband, Luke Letlow, due to COVID-19 shortly after he was elected in late 2020.

Her Senate run comes after President Trump indicated he would endorse her if she chose to enter the race.

Letlow’s entry adds to a competitive field that includes Cassidy, who is aiming for a third term, as well as state Treasurer John Fleming, who is also looking to secure a Senate seat in late 2024.

Trump publicly praised Letlow, saying, “I know Julia well and have seen her tested under pressure, and she is a total winner! Julia Letlow has my full support if she decides to run. Run, Julia, run!”

Cassidy, the chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, had previously collaborated with Trump. However, tensions arose when Cassidy voted to impeach Trump following the January 6 events, citing concerns about incitement of the riot. Cassidy also teamed up with Democrats on a controversial infrastructure bill that received limited conservative backing.

Reflecting on Letlow’s campaign, Cassidy commented, “Even if I am re-elected, I’ll keep doing my best. I’m a conservative focused on improving Louisiana and America.”
