Julius Randle Stays with the Timberwolves

Julius Randle is sticking around. The former Knicks forward, who joined the Minnesota Timberwolves in a trade involving Karl-Anthony Towns just before last year’s training camp, is reportedly poised to sign a new three-year contract worth $100 million, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The structure includes a player option for the third year.

At 30 years old, Randle previously had a $30.9 million option for the 2025-26 season.

This decision follows the Timberwolves’ recent commitment to Naz Reid, who signed a five-year, $125 million deal. During his first year with the Timberwolves, Randle averaged 18.7 points and 7.1 rebounds, playing a key role in helping the team reach the Western Conference Finals for the second consecutive year.

He notably excelled in the second round against the Warriors, where he put up averages of 25.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 7.4 assists over a five-game series before facing the Thunder in the conference finals.

Prior to his time with the Timberwolves, Randle signed a contract with Donte DiVincenzo and had five seasons with the Knicks. His time in New York was a bit polarizing—there were mixed feelings among fans about his performance in the playoffs and his dominant style of play, though he was a crucial part of the franchise rebuilding efforts.

For example, back in the 2020-21 season, he led the Knicks to a fourth seed in the Eastern Conference, averaging an impressive 24.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, which earned him an All-Star nod and the Most Improved Player award.

After a challenging season in 2021-22, Randle rebounded well, making consecutive All-Star appearances alongside Jalen Brunson during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons.

Initially drafted seventh overall in 2014 by the Lakers, Randle spent his first four seasons in Los Angeles before moving on to the Pelicans and eventually landing in New York.
