Fernández’s Vision for the Nets Takes Shape in Preseason Win
Jordi Fernández has consistently emphasized his desire for the Nets to play with intensity and focus on defensive disruption. While it’s just the preseason, early signs indicate he’s achieving that goal.
A prime example emerged in Thursday night’s 114-108 victory over Philadelphia, showcasing Julius Randle’s determination as he hustled, pressed, and dove for a loose ball.
This is a veteran, soon to turn 32, whose commitment was sometimes questioned during his time in Minnesota. Randle was part of a salary dump by a Timberwolves team looking to rebuild, now giving his all for a Nets squad in a similar position. It’s striking to see the only All-Star on the roster throwing himself after loose balls and bringing full-court pressure.
“You said it—he’s a three-time All-Star and has playoff experience. Here he is, the first to dive for the ball and apply full-court pressure,” Fernández commented. “I couldn’t ask for a better leader or veteran presence. He may not be old, but he’s mature for his age.”
“I’m thrilled because we really need that energy. Those hustle plays are what lead to wins, right? You dive for a ball, recover it, and then score. That kind of play shifts momentum and enhances the atmosphere in the arena. I’m really happy with that effort, and we saw glimpses of it in other instances as well.”
Randle wrapped up the game with a team-high 14 points, matching the team high with six rebounds, along with two steals and two assists in just over 21 minutes on the court.
He mentioned discussions with Fernández about potentially playing some small-ball center in various offensive schemes.
On the injury front, Michael Porter Jr. (left wrist soreness), Day’Ron Sharpe (left shoulder soreness), Mikel Brown Jr. (ankle recovery), and Joshua Jefferson (lower back) all missed the game. Their availability for the upcoming match in Washington remains uncertain.
“I really can’t say,” Fernández noted. “We’ll have to see how they feel. Mike’s just sore, and Mikel is progressing well. We’ll evaluate them after our day off on Friday. But I’m pleased with our overall health at this point.”
The Nets have also signed guard Dion Brown.
In the absence of Sharpe, Mo Wagner stepped into the starting role.
In terms of defense, Wagner mentioned he’s still acclimating to the Nets’ system but managed to record a game-high four steals.
Chaney Johnson contributed two additional steals and a pair of blocks, expressing, “I take a lot of pride in my defense. That’s my calling card.”
Playing on a two-way contract, Johnson spent considerable time at center, despite being just 6-foot-8.
“His versatility is incredible; he’s multi-positional and really strong, able to guard several different positions,” Fernández remarked. “He can contribute on both ends and adapt when needed.”
