Red, white, dual view!
This year, Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks will launch from both the East River and the Hudson River, a unique event as New York City gears up to honor America’s 250th anniversary.
Marking its own 50th anniversary, Macy’s spectacular fireworks display is set to illuminate the Brooklyn Bridge, bringing joy to those in both New York City and Jersey City.
“We’re excited to celebrate our 50th anniversary with a once-in-a-lifetime experience that combines inspiring storytelling and the dazzling performances that bring millions together across the nation,” said Sharon Otterman, Macy’s chief marketing officer, in a statement.
Traditionally, Macy’s fireworks have alternated between the East and Hudson rivers, but it’s uncommon for both to be used during the same event.
The last occurrence was back in 2000, when Macy’s held an extensive boat parade followed by a fireworks display on both rivers.
Initially, Macy’s aimed to get permission from New York City for a fireworks barge on the Hudson this year. However, city officials denied the permit due to concerns about a gathering of 250 sailboats in the area earlier that day.
Officials indicated that because of this, Macy’s sought and successfully obtained a permit from New Jersey instead. Two fireworks barges will be stationed off the Jersey City coast.
Designated viewing spots in Jersey City include various locations near Colgate Clock and Hudson Street, though Exchange Place will be excluded from public access, according to organizers.
Mayor Zoran Mamdani previously held a lottery giving away 100,000 free tickets for prime viewing spots at Brooklyn Bridge Park and Manhattan’s Seaport along the East River.
Specific ticketed areas are at Piers 1-6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park and Seaport Square.
A non-ticketed public viewing area for the East River show is planned along FDR Drive, but further details have not yet been released.
