Actor Sam Neill Passes Away at 78

Sam Neill, best recognized for portraying Dr. Alan Grant in the beloved Jurassic Park series, has passed away at the age of 78, as announced on his social media platforms.

His family, referred to as “whanau” in Maori, shared that the New Zealand actor died on Monday in Sydney, Australia.

“Sam passed away surrounded by his family, embodying the dignity that defined his life,” the message stated. “Though his passing was sudden and unexpected, his survival from cancer was a remarkable blessing.”

Neill, originally from Northern Ireland, had been diagnosed with a rare blood cancer in 2022. After facing the challenges posed by the illness, he announced in April that he was cancer-free.

While his role in Jurassic Park is perhaps his most famous, Neill also appeared in films such as The Hunt for Red October, The Piano, and Event Horizon. Additionally, he made notable contributions to television through shows like Peaky Blinders, Riley, Ace of Spies, and The Tudors.

Nicole Kidman, who starred alongside Neill in Dead Calm, shared her sorrow over his death, saying, “Sam was one of the greats. It was a pleasure to be with him… He was kind, funny, and intelligent, and he will be missed dearly. My heart goes out to his family.”

Many others, including New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, expressed their condolences.

“Sir Sam Neill was one of the greats,” Luxon mentioned in a post. “He began his career when there was hardly any film industry in New Zealand. For over 50 years, he conveyed our stories to the world, helping shape our film industry into a significant cultural export. His legacy will endure long after we’re gone. Our thoughts tonight are with his family and friends. May he rest in peace,” he continued.

Universal Pictures, the studio behind the Jurassic Park series, also honored the late actor on social media, stating, “Rest in peace to Jurassic legend Sam Neill.”
