Jury reaches a decision in the trial of Hawaii doctor Gerhardt Konig.

Hawaii doctor questioned about wife's 'digital surveillance' in murder trial

Hawaiian Anesthesiologist Found Guilty of Attempted Murder

Gerhard König, an anesthesiologist in Hawaii, has been convicted of attempted second-degree murder following an attack on his wife, which prosecutors describe as brutal and motivated by suspicions of infidelity.

The jury was shown disturbing body camera footage showing König’s wife bloodied, with testimony detailing the events of March 24, 2025, on a hiking trail in Oahu. It was reported that he repeatedly struck her in the head amid accusations of jealousy and betrayal, stemming from his growing belief that she was unfaithful.

Evidence presented by forensic investigators included searches and posts on König’s laptop that suggested premeditation. These ranged from topics about cheating to threads specifically titled “I lied again” and “It’s over.”

König’s actions were allegedly premeditated; it was revealed that he purchased an audio recorder and searched for remote hiking locations, inputting words like “murder,” “death,” and even maintaining a Dropbox folder labeled “divorce.”

The couple had traveled from Maui to Oahu for a birthday trip when the confrontation escalated. According to Ariel Koenig’s testimony, her husband attempted to push her off a cliff. In her struggle for survival, she clung to the ground, and at one point, he brandished a syringe, telling her to “hold still.”

“I just started screaming… he’s trying to kill me,” she recounted, as two climbers, prompted by her cries for help, dashed to the scene and called 911.

Jurors later viewed body camera footage showing Ariel, injured and disoriented, struggling to stay conscious while bystanders helped her.

Gerhard’s son, Emil König, corroborated parts of the narrative, stating that his father called him shortly after the attack and confessed his actions. He claimed Gerhard said he wouldn’t return to Maui and had tried to kill Ariel due to the affair allegations.

In court, Gerhard denied the accusations, asserting that the situation escalated after an argument about the alleged affair. He described feeling betrayed upon discovering compromising messages between his wife and another man. He claimed the encounter became violent only after Ariel pushed him first, while he insisted that he acted only in self-defense.

While Gerhard acknowledged feeling remorse for his violent actions, he firmly denied the attempt to harm her with the syringe or push her off the cliff.

Law enforcement had found him shortly after the incident, with possible bloodstains on his shirt and later arrested him after a brief struggle. A bag containing stained items including stones and medical supplies was reportedly linked to him.

The defense argued that the situation was an unintentional scuffle stemming from marital issues, suggesting the injuries were not severe. However, Ariel countered this, stating, “I would call this an assault versus a scuffle.”

Ultimately, jurors faced a difficult choice: determining whether the incident stemmed from jealousy that culminated in premeditated attempted murder or whether it was merely a heated altercation that spiraled into violence.
