Jury selection anticipated to conclude in Ryan Routh federal murder case

Selection Ongoing for Jury in Ryan Rouse’s Trial

The jury selection process is expected to wrap up on Wednesday for the federal trial of Ryan Rouse, a 59-year-old man from North Carolina accused of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump last year.

The court is in the midst of finalizing a panel of jurors, needing to fill 12 main jurors and four alternates before the trial is set to begin on Thursday morning.

By the close of Tuesday’s proceedings, over 70 out of 180 potential jurors had already been dismissed. Many expressed strong opinions regarding Trump, mentioned connections to law enforcement, or voiced concerns about fairness in such a politically charged case.

It remains to be seen if the court will be able to assemble a complete jury panel, as Rouse seems to be pushing the limits of courtroom decorum. Judge Irene Cannon, appointed by Trump, has had several confrontations with Rouse, particularly as he raised politically sensitive topics during jury questioning.

Judge’s Selection Process Continues

The jury selection in Rouse’s case continues, with accusations that he attempted to kill Trump at the Trump Golf Club in West Palm Beach in September 2024.

Rouse posed unusual questions regarding the jurors’ views on Ukraine, the conflict in Gaza, and even how they felt about turtles crossing streets, prompting Judge Cannon to remind him about appropriate courtroom behavior. His adult children were also present in court, and one son, listed as a character witness, is currently in jail on unrelated charges.

Rouse tried to challenge one potential juror who mentioned having breakfast with the former president 25 years ago, arguing that his past connection might jeopardize impartiality. However, Cannon dismissed those concerns and pointed out that past interactions do not disqualify a juror.

Strange Questions and Dismissed Jurors

On Tuesday, 23 jurors were removed from the third pool of 60, leaving about 110 candidates still under consideration. Among those dismissed were individuals who had personal ties to Rouse’s arrest or who expressed strong support for Trump, verbally declaring, “I’m a Maga… this is our president.”

Rouse did attempt to argue against certain jurors on the basis of their remarks during the selection process, but the court ultimately allowed these challenges to proceed.

Background on the Trial

Rouse has pleaded not guilty toattempted assassination of a presidential candidate and assaulting a federal officer. Prosecutors assert that he was armed with an AK-style rifle when he was arrested near Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach back in September 2024.

The trial is tentatively set to begin on Thursday, September 11, assuming the jury is seated promptly. It’s expected to last several weeks, with Judge Cannon urging both sides to maintain efficiency throughout the proceedings.
