Illinois Supreme Court overturns defamation case empire A judge ruled Thursday that actor Jussie Smollett's hate crime hoax case cannot be retried.
Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx originally offered Smollett a plea deal that required him to forfeit his $10,000 bail and complete 15 hours of volunteer community service.
Mr Justice Rochford said: “I am aware that this case has caused significant public interest and that many people were dissatisfied with the resolution of the original case and believed it to be unfair.”
“Nevertheless, what would be more unjust than the resolution of a single criminal case would be a court finding that the state is not obliged to honor an agreement on which people have relied to their detriment,” she continued. .
