Justice Department aims to charge former FBI Director James Comey

DOJ Examines Possible Perjury Case Against James Comey

The Department of Justice is reportedly investigating former FBI director James Comey over allegations of lying to Congress. This inquiry specifically focuses on his testimony from September 30, 2020, as well as his management of the investigation into Russian interference during the 2016 US presidential election.

Prosecutors could pursue charges that carry a five-year sentence, with the deadline for filing them arriving next Tuesday. The case is currently overseen by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Virginia.

A source familiar with the matter noted, “DOJ officials are evaluating whether to charge Comey, who’s accused of providing false statements to Congress.” The situation is somewhat urgent, as a decision is expected soon from a major judge in Virginia, although details on the specific testimonies under scrutiny remain unclear.

Trump has consistently criticized Comey, suggesting he and former CIA director John Brennan acted in bad faith during their inquiries. Back in July, Trump expressed his views on Comey and Brennan, implying they were “very dishonest” and that their actions may eventually have consequences.

In 2017, Trump decided to fire Comey, citing concerns over his conduct during investigations.

Trump has claimed that both Comey and Brennan politicized intelligence to discredit his presidency, referring to these investigations as a “witch hunt” that has strained US relations, particularly regarding accusations surrounding Russia.

The probe into these matters eventually transitioned to special counsel Robert Mueller, who found no sufficient evidence of a criminal conspiracy tied to Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia. During Trump’s first term, another special counsel, John Durham, was appointed to investigate the FBI’s “Crossfire Hurricane” framework regarding supposed links between Trump and Russia.

While the investigation has led to criminal charges against a few lesser-known FBI staff, Durham indicated that he found serious errors within the Bureau but ruled out any criminal wrongdoing by top officials.
