Justice Department deploying election monitors to polling places in California and New Jersey

DOJ sending election monitors to California, New Jersey voting sites

The Department of Justice plans to deploy election observers to polling places in California and New Jersey during next month’s off-year elections.

Officials from the DOJ will oversee elections across six counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Kern, Riverside, and Fresno in California, along with Passaic County in New Jersey, as indicated in an official announcement.

According to the statement, the DOJ routinely sends staff to monitor elections nationwide to ensure adherence to federal civil rights laws.

Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized the importance of transparency, noting that it helps build trust in the electoral process. She affirmed the DOJ’s commitment to maintaining high election integrity standards, promising the necessary resources for fair and transparent elections.

This initiative comes as New Jersey faces a vacant gubernatorial seat and California holds a special election aimed at redrawing congressional maps to counter Republican redistricting efforts.

Rick Hasen, a professor specializing in election law at UCLA, suggested in a social media post that this might be a preliminary step for the 2026 elections.

Rusty Hicks, chairman of the California Democratic Party, criticized the monitoring as an act of “election interference by the California Republican Party,” raising concerns about manipulating the process before it even begins. He shared his thoughts on social media, highlighting the disconcerting trend of parties acting more like promotional groups for certain figures.

In New Jersey, Attorney General Matthew Platkin reassured voters that election officials will be on hand to facilitate a smooth voting experience. He reiterated the state’s commitment to ensuring that all eligible voters can cast their ballots free from harassment, discrimination, or intimidation. Platkin also mentioned that anyone attempting to disrupt the electoral process would be held accountable.

Following this announcement, Platkin expressed criticism toward the DOJ for not providing a valid justification for their actions, as reported by the Associated Press.
