Justice Department Considers Indicting James Comey
MSNBC reports that the Justice Department is moving towards seeking an indictment against James Comey, following allegations of him lying during congressional testimony.
Two sources within the Department of Justice, as well as others familiar with the investigation, have confirmed that this inquiry is being handled by prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Virginia. It appears to relate to Comey’s statements regarding leaks to the Wall Street Journal back in September 2020, which were tied to an email scandal involving Hillary Clinton during her presidential campaign.
One official mentioned that, while some internal matters are still being resolved, the specifics of the charges remain unclear.
A spokesman for the DOJ opted not to comment when asked about the situation involving Comey.
This past Saturday, former President Donald Trump took to social media to urge Attorney General Pam Bondi to take action against Comey and other perceived adversaries, suggesting that delays in prosecuting these individuals could harm the reputation and credibility of the administration. He stated, “I’ve reviewed over 30 statements and posts, and it’s the same old story—lots of talk, no action.”
Comey has consistently maintained that he is innocent regarding these allegations. Although he did not respond directly to media inquiries concerning this latest report, he has previously expressed his reluctance to engage with how investigations are portrayed.
In a somewhat unrelated incident from May, Comey shared a post on social media featuring a shell arrangement from a beach, which was interpreted as a veiled threat towards Trump. He later removed the post and issued an apology after being contacted by an FBI agent about it.
