Justice Department Weighs Transgender Gun Ban Following Catholic School Shooting

DOJ Considers Blocking Transgender Individuals from Buying Firearms Following Minnesota Shooting

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is contemplating a ban on firearm purchases by transgender individuals after a tragic shooting incident on August 27 at a Catholic school in Minnesota. This event involved a trans-identifying man who opened fire, resulting in the deaths of two children and injuries to 21 others before taking his own life.

The shooter, Robin Westman, who identifies as a woman, drew attention not just for the violence but also for how it has ignited discussions about mental health, transgender issues, and violence. The potential aim of the ban seems to be to prevent individuals dealing with gender dysphoria or other mental health issues from acquiring firearms in unstable conditions. Many, including officials, appear to believe this is a logical step.

Court records reveal that Westman’s mother had sought to change his name from Robert Paul to Robin M when he was still a minor. In reflections, Westman expressed regret about his transgender identity, suggesting a link between his mental health issues and the violence. He cautioned against allowing children to transition before they turn 17, stating that “gender and weeds messed with my head.”

This incident echoes a similar attack in Nashville in 2023, where a woman identifying as male killed three children and teachers. Sources from the DOJ indicated that there’s a push for common sense gun laws, very much in line with Democratic initiatives.

A DOJ spokesperson confirmed that discussions are ongoing around various options to limit access to firearms by those deemed mentally unstable, particularly concerning public safety in schools.

On the other side, some local officials, such as Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, have condemned the narrative that ties Westman’s actions to transgender identity. Frey criticized those who use this tragedy as a means to target the transgender community, urging for more empathy and sensible discourse.

Since taking office, President Donald Trump has worked to unwind several policies from the Biden administration relating to transgender issues, emphasizing a broader reevaluation of gender-related designations in several contexts.

As of now, the DOJ has not issued any public comments related to these developments.
