Chief Justice Roberts Addresses Political Rhetoric Targeting Judges
Chief Justice John Roberts of the US Supreme Court is set to discuss the troubling trend of violent political rhetoric aimed at judges during a gathering in Charlotte, North Carolina. His remarks are part of a statement released on Saturday at the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference.
Roberts emphasized that judges are often caught in the midst of political conflicts. He cautioned that those in politics should be mindful of this reality.
In particular, he criticized Senator Chuck Schumer for comments made regarding the abortion case involving Trump-appointed justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch. Schumer had warned, “You’ve unleashed a whirlwind. You’ll pay the price. If you carry on with these terrible decisions, you won’t know what hit you.” He later clarified that his comments were aimed at Senate Republicans, not a personal threat.
Back in March, Roberts condemned former President Trump’s remarks directed at a judge who paused the deportation of members of a gang known as Tren de Aragua, according to Breitbart News. Roberts stated, “For over two centuries, it has been established that verbal assault is not an appropriate response to disagreements about a judicial ruling. There’s a standard process for appealing decisions.”
Interestingly, Trump had praised a recent decision that curtailed a federal district judge’s ability to issue broad national injunctions. He called it a “big decision, an amazing decision” and expressed his satisfaction. Trump claimed, “I was elected for a historic mission, but I have observed several radical left judges trying to overturn the legitimate powers of the president and hinder American voters from realizing the policies they overwhelmingly supported.”
In 2022, Roberts had already spoken about a collaborative effort to provide protection for judges, urging the need for measures that ensure their safety.
