Justin Herbert threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Chargers defeat the Chiefs 27-21 in São Paulo on Friday night, ending a seven-game losing streak against Kansas City.
“It’s huge,” remarked Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh. “I think September 5th will be remembered in Charger history. This was a significant win.”
This matchup marked the second NFL game held in South America, streamed live on YouTube, and featured Brazilian football icon Neymar among the attendees. Notably absent was newly engaged pop sensation Taylor Swift, who was there to support her fiancé, Travis Kelce, while instead enjoying a halftime performance by Colombian artist Karol G.
Herbert became only the third quarterback in franchise history to throw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns in a season opener. At one point, he made an impressive 19-yard run during a key third-down conversion. He finished the game completing 25 of 34 passes while being sacked three times.
“We anticipated a tough fight, and we came ready to compete,” said Herbert. “It was a thrilling experience.”
Meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes completed 24 of 39 passes for 258 yards, managing just one touchdown along with two sacks.
Herbert’s 23-yard touchdown pass to Quentin Johnston in the fourth quarter extended the lead to 26-18 with just over five minutes remaining. Earlier, they had connected for a 5-yard touchdown on the opening drive.
In a scramble, Mahomes attempted to connect with Marcus Brown but was under pressure from Khalil Mack, resulting in a field goal that brought the score closer at 27-21 with 2:34 left on the clock.
The Chiefs had narrowed the gap to 20-18 after Mahomes threw a 37-yard touchdown pass, but a crucial two-point conversion failed when his pass attempt was incomplete.
Herbert’s short passes kept the momentum in the Chargers’ favor, including an 11-yard connection with Keenan Allen, who returned to the team this season after a stint in Chicago.
This victory marked the first time the Chargers won against the Chiefs in Kansas City since September 26, 2021.
Injuries
Injuries were a concern for the Chiefs as they played without two receivers; Lacey Rice was suspended while rookie Jaren Royals faced a knee issue. Additionally, they lost three players during the game.
Kelce sustained a right shoulder injury after colliding with his teammate Xavier Worthy during a pass attempt, forcing him out of the game.
Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman also did not return after suffering an ankle injury during the game.
Upcoming Matches
The Chiefs are set to host the Philadelphia Eagles in a Super Bowl rematch on September 14, while the Chargers will travel to Las Vegas on September 15 to face another division rival.
