Justin Murphy Wins Republican Senate Primary in New Jersey
Late Tuesday evening, Justin Murphy emerged victorious in the Republican Senate primary in New Jersey, setting the stage for a general election matchup against incumbent Democratic Senator Cory Booker. It’s noteworthy that Republicans have not clinched a Senate seat in this state since 1972.
The primary was fiercely contested among the top three candidates, with nearly all votes counted. Following Murphy were New Jersey State Trooper Richard Tabor and former News 12 reporter Alex Zudan, who were suspended from the race. Physician Robert Lebovics brought up the rear.
Murphy, who hails from Tabernacle, New Jersey, is a lawyer and U.S. Navy veteran. He previously sought the Republican Senate nomination in 2024 but finished in a narrow third. This time, he’s positioning himself as a conservative, grassroots candidate aligned with Trump’s policies.
He faces a challenging race against Booker, a prominent Senate Democrat known for his criticisms of Trump. Booker, who has held his seat since winning a special election in 2013, is running unopposed for re-election within his party. Republicans are hopeful to change the dynamics, even with a long drought in Senate victories.
Murphy, self-employed and a former deputy mayor of Tabernacle, also describes his campaign focusing on pollution control, opposition to expansive windmill projects, parental rights, medical freedom, and enhancing Medicare for seniors.
In a statement on his campaign website, Murphy declared, “I will carry the Conservative cause with confidence, energy and optimism. The last time New Jersey elected a Republican senator was 1972. My campaign represents a new day in New Jersey politics.” He added that his experiences as a small business owner make him sympathetic to the challenges faced by middle-class voters.
Interestingly, the primary unfolded without a clear endorsement from Trump, as several House Republicans, including Tom Kean Jr., Jeff Van Drew, and Chris Smith, made late endorsements ahead of the primary.
According to NJ Spotlight News’ Voter Guide for the U.S. Senate Primary, Murphy received backing from two county Republican organizations and campaigned under the banner “Conservative Republicans of America.”
As the general election approaches, it will be interesting to see if Republicans can make significant strides in a state that has proven to be tough territory for GOP Senate candidates. Booker previously secured his seat in the 2020 election by more than 16 points, indicating that early projections suggest a strong hold for Democrats as November draws near.
