Justin Rose is Team Europe's 'Veteran,' a steady presence for the Ryder Cup

Justin Rose’s Role in the Ryder Cup

Justin Rose is clear about his position within the European Ryder Cup team. At 45, he brings considerable experience, having participated in six Ryder Cups. He holds the “Elder Politician” title well, especially as he’s nine years older than fellow competitor Rory McIlroy.

Rose first played in this event nearly 20 years ago, in 2008, and his journey has now positioned him as a mentor for younger players. With the right mix of experience and support, he’s become a valuable partner, aiding the growth of those around him.

In 2023, he teamed up with Robert McIntyre, supposedly providing support to the new Ryder Cup rookie during the tournament. When asked about it recently, Rose was humble, deflecting credit from himself.

“Being the best leader means being the best version of yourself,” he mentioned. “The last Ryder Cup taught me to focus on what works for me and lead by example.” Although he played a supporting role, he felt that the experience ultimately benefited him more than it did McIntyre.

This sentiment echoed the thoughts of teammate Tommy Fleetwood, who reflected on how Rose contributes as the team’s “old man.” Since 2018, Fleetwood has witnessed Rose’s evolution as both a competitor and a leader.

Fleetwood added, “He doesn’t need to be loud or overly motivational. His presence alone, along with the wisdom he shares and his preparation on the course, sets an example.”

Moreover, Rose’s performance demonstrates that he isn’t slowing down any time soon. Currently ranked 14th in the world, he boasts a solid Ryder Cup record of 14 wins, 9 losses, and 3 draws, along with a stellar 7-2-1 in Foursomes.

Reflecting on his partnership experiences, Rose emphasized the importance of mutual respect. He explained, “You shouldn’t have to apologize to your partner if things don’t go well. There shouldn’t be that sinking feeling of disappointment. It’s vital to maintain trust and support.”
