“If you want to be a Numbskull like Justin Trudeau, and say, 'Oh, we'll do this,' [respond to U.S. tariffs by raising their own tariffs]and then tariffs will rise,” Bescent said Thursday before the economic club in New York.
“But if you want to sit down and discuss with the USTR of the Commerce Department, I'm happy to be able to discuss with our foreigners,” the Treasury Secretary added.
Bescent responded to what Trudeau made on the same day. The Prime Minister has made it clear that Canada will take part in a trade war with the United States.
“We can see that this will follow a trade war launched by the US for a foreseeable future,” Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa on Thursday.
Canada recently imposed a 25% tariff on $30 billion in US imports, and Trudeau said the tax will not be lifted until the Trump administration ends trade measures.
Canada says it's not enough to stop the flow of fentanyl and illegal immigration to the US across the border, but says he had an almost hour-long conversation with Trudeau on Wednesday. Report By Reuters.
“It was a colorful call, and it was also a very substantial call,” Trudeau said. “We are trying to ensure that these tariffs do not do too much harm in certain sectors in the short term, certainly.”
Trudeau, who is set to resign as Canadian Prime Minister, was seen crying at a press conference on Thursday. Report A profanity call with President Trump.
“I put Canadians first every day in this office and make sure I have people's backs. So I'm here to tell you everything we've got to you. Even on this last day of government, we won't disappoint Canadians,” Trudeau said in tears in his eyes.
