Justin Verlander Looking to Pitch Next Season
It seems Justin Verlander isn’t quite ready to hang up his baseball glove just yet. At the age of 42, he expressed to the San Francisco Standard his eagerness to pitch in the upcoming season.
Despite a remarkable career, featuring World Series championships with the Astros in both 2017 and 2022, this season has been challenging for him. “I mean, I want to do it,” Verlander remarked. “At this point in my career, if something is really wrong, I’m not going to rehab surgery or anything. I know that is an option, but I’m proving this season that I can still be effective. It’s never an easy sport, but I believe I’m still capable.”
Over the years, Verlander has faced numerous injuries, so it’s worth noting that his enthusiasm to play next season might come with some caution.
This season, he holds a 4.53 ERA with a disappointing 1-9 record. It took until his 17th start for him to earn his first win on a Giants team that currently sits at a .500 record of 59-59.
Recently, Verlander achieved his 3,500th career strikeout, bringing him closer to moving up the all-time strikeout list.
During the Giants’ 8-0 loss to the Nationals, he set a personal record at home. “I was thrilled to reach that milestone and share the moment with the fans,” he commented. “It’s a significant achievement for me, and I’m truly thankful for the journey to get here.”
