Kacey Musgraves Faces Backlash Over Plea for Deported Migrant Children’s Aid
Kacey Musgraves, the acclaimed country singer with multiple Grammy awards, is encountering significant backlash after urging her audience to support a legal aid organization that assists children of deported migrants. This occurs as she allocates part of her concert revenue to the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.
At the recent opening night of her tour in Chicago, Musgraves went beyond monetary contributions and made a heartfelt appeal to her audience. “It’s a wonderful organization, and they help give aid—legal aid—and money to children whose parents have been deported unfairly,” she stated during her performance at the United Center. She emphasized that the initiative isn’t politically motivated but rather a humanitarian effort. “That would mean a lot to me. If you don’t want to, that’s totally fine too,” she added, showcasing her consideration for differing viewpoints.
While the crowd responded with applause and support, there were also noticeable boos mixed in. Some critics on social media speculated that this move could damage Musgraves’ career.
One critic remarked, “[Musgraves] has just officially ended her career by asking for money for criminals who used their children as pawns to commit crime and stay in America illegally. She could have asked for money for Americans who need assistance but nope. She’s done!” Another detractor questioned, “How about donating money to help kids whose parents have been killed by illegal immigrants? What happened to the country music industry?”
Further critiques suggested a boycott of her music. One user stated, “People need to stop giving money to these pieces of s**ts, and I’m talking about the likes of Kacey Musgraves. Don’t buy her music, don’t go to her concerts. And if you do, you might as well say you’re okay with illegal immigration.”
In the past, Musgraves has showcased her support for immigrant rights. For instance, in May, she had a teenage mariachi band open for her concert, which had garnered attention after being detained by ICE.
A spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security defended the policies regarding the detention of minors, stating, “The law requires illegal aliens who show up at a port of entry without valid entry to be detained while all their claims are heard.” They further asserted that the current administration is focused on upholding the law.
Musgraves’ “Middle of Nowhere” tour is set to continue, with upcoming stops in New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.
