Former Vice President Kamala Harris is set to lead a fundraising dinner for the Democratic National Committee on Tuesday, which is her latest move heading into the political limelight among 2024 presidential hopefuls. An invitation revealed that this gathering will attract key party figures and donors, with ticket prices starting at $25,000. Harris is reportedly contemplating her political future after a setback in her candidacy against President Trump last November.
She’s considering options, including a potential run for the governor’s seat in California in 2026 or launching another presidential campaign in 2028. This event also represents a chance for Democrats to regroup following a period characterized by low approval ratings and challenges in maintaining control of the White House and Senate ahead of the upcoming elections.
Georgia Cardona, a DNC committee member, emphasized Harris’s understanding of the current political landscape, suggesting she remains a beloved figure among Democrats. The DNC intends to leverage its resources to energize its base ahead of the next two election cycles. Cardona noted that it’s a smart strategy for the DNC to utilize prominent Democratic figures, including former officials, to draw attention and resources.
This fundraiser comes shortly after a major donor event hosted by the president at a Virginia golf course, which was focused on funding aligned with Trump’s 2024 campaign. Harris has previously showcased her fundraising acumen, raising over $1 billion in three months during her last campaign for the White House.
Cardona remarked on Harris’s impressive fundraising capabilities, asserting that she continues to attract significant support from dedicated Democratic contributors. The DNC is channeling funds raised into building operational and strategic efforts as the midterms approach.
However, some voices, like Adam Green from the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, suggest that Harris’s past campaign efforts might not fully resonate with voters. He pointed out that she needs to be mindful of her political trajectory, given the perceptions shaped during her previous runs. Harris’s upcoming appearance at the DNC event will involve a Q&A session with National Party Chairman Ken Martin.
Moreover, Harris’s recent comments have hinted at a potential focus on Trump’s economic policies, which faced criticism during her prior campaigns. While Harris is actively discussing her future with advisors, a source noted that she plans to make a decision on the governor’s run by summer’s end.
Harris’s extensive background includes serving as California’s Attorney General and representing the state in the U.S. Senate before joining the Biden ticket. If she chooses to run for governor, she is expected to be a prominent contender in a heavily Democratic state looking to succeed the term-limited Governor Gavin Newsom.
Amid growing interest in the 2028 presidential race, early polling suggests Harris has some recognition advantages over other potential candidates. Yet, securing a governorship could present her with a significant platform for a future presidential bid. Despite uncertainty, Harris has committed to staying politically active, affirming her dedication to the party. She reiterated her intention to remain involved, saying, “I’m not going anywhere.”
While Harris is a focus, others in the Democratic landscape, such as Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, are also garnering attention for possible future runs. Recent events, including a large rally featuring Senator Bernie Sanders, have amplified speculation regarding potential political ambitions leading up to 2028.
Green noted the desire for a candidate who embodies a fresh perspective on systemic issues, suggesting that Harris may not resonate as strongly in that regard compared to other Democrats.
