David Plouffe, a senior adviser to the Harris campaign, said Vice President Kamala Harris' loss to President-elect Donald Trump was due to weak elections in battleground states.
“It's always worth reminding people: It's really hard for Democrats to win in battleground states,” Plouffe said in his paper. Podcast posted on Tuesday.
Plouffe appeared on a podcast with Harris' former campaign chair Jen O'Malley and other Democratic strategists to discuss why Harris was unable to defeat Trump.

Before the election, Plouffe analyzed the electoral situation in each battleground state.
“Given the tough political environment we were in, the fact that we brought the race to a dead heat was a positive, but, well, it was a slow development.”
“Let’s look at Pennsylvania,” he said, launching into a discussion of some of the most important battleground states. “Roughly, 25 percent of voters are liberal. 34 percent are conservative. By the way, in most battleground states, the number of conservatives is over 40. So in every battleground state, there are more conservatives than liberals. There are more conservatives. So in Pennsylvania, if secession is to be believed, Mr. Trump won over the conservatives 91-8, and Ms. Harris won over the liberals 93-6. It's 56-43, but it's like 60% of the time we have to win, right?
“It would be a false choice for Democrats to win in battleground states,” Plouffe continued. “Obviously, we want to make the most of our locations, and that's where we've spent a tremendous amount of time and a lot of resources. That's important. And obviously in Milwaukee, just to name a few. I think we'll use it, but we missed our turnout goals a little bit in Philadelphia and Detroit, so that's not good. That's part of the equation.”

Plouffe said that in order for Democrats to win national elections, they need to “monopoly” the moderate vote or face difficulties as a party.
“Math is completely useless,” Plouffe said.
“It was a dead heat race,” Plouffe continued. “The political atmosphere was pretty brutal.”
