Vice President Kamala Harris, who is currently running for the Democratic presidential nomination, was once a leading advocate for allowing undocumented immigrants to practice law in the sanctuary state of California.

Harris was California’s attorney general at the time and a strong advocate for Garcia’s admission to the bar, paving the way for thousands of undocumented immigrants in the state to become attorneys.

Despite his efforts, Garcia caught the attention of California’s top law enforcement official, then-Attorney General and now presidential candidate Kamala Harris, in 2012. Vice President Harris’ support “shifted the needle in this case” and ultimately led to the California Supreme Court’s unanimous decision. The ruling went in Garcia’s favor, according to Kevin Johnson, dean of the University of California, Davis School of Law and one of the lawyers who represented Garcia before the California Bar.

For decades, Harris has advocated for legislation to protect illegal immigrants from federal immigration enforcement.
