Kamala Harris Complains About the 'System' Being 'Broken' After Years of Influencing It

Kamala Harris Critiques “Broken” System

Former Vice President Kamala Harris expressed frustration on Thursday, stating that the “system” is “broken” after years in public service. She announced on Wednesday that she would not run for governor in California.

Harris’s political career spans multiple roles, including district attorney in San Francisco from 2004 to 2011, California Attorney General from 2011 to 2016, and U.S. Senator from 2017 to 2021, before becoming Vice President from 2021 to 2025. In an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” she revealed that her decision to withdraw from the gubernatorial race was influenced by disillusionment with the current political framework.

“I’m a dedicated civil servant, and I’ve devoted my career to public service. I genuinely considered running for governor because I love California,” Harris shared. “I’ve held the roles of district attorney, attorney general, and senator. Yet, I often found myself having to explain my choice to become a prosecutor to my family earlier in my career.”

She went on to express her desire to reform the system, questioning why she should make such efforts if the system feels fundamentally flawed. “Recently, I made the choice that, for now, I don’t wish to re-enter that system. It feels broken,” Harris stated.

She further clarified that her remarks weren’t intended to disregard essential roles like teachers, firefighters, and nurses. “I once thought our democracy was quite vulnerable. I believed our system could uphold our foundational principles, but now I’m uncertain if it’s as robust as necessary,” she commented. “Right now, I prefer to travel and engage with people across the country.”

Host Stephen Colbert reacted to her pessimism about the system, suggesting it sounded like a resignation. Harris rebuffed this notion, asserting, “I’m certainly going to stay in the fight.”

The former Vice President was on the show to discuss her forthcoming book, titled “107 Days,” which is set to be released in September. The book covers her experiences, including her losses in all seven swing states to Donald Trump.

Although she opted out of the governor race, Harris did not rule out a potential run in the 2028 presidential election.

Meanwhile, political commentator Chris Chiliza cautioned on his YouTube channel that Harris’s re-emergence could pose challenges for Democrats, reminding voters of a “bad era” when the party already faces unpopularity.
