Political Maneuvering in the Wake of Biden’s Campaign Suspension
Former Democratic fundraiser Lindy Li, who switched her party affiliation due to concerns over President Joe Biden’s declining campaign, has shared insights into the situation just before he ended his bid for reelection. Li suspects that Kamala Harris was quietly positioning herself to attract Biden’s supporters while publicly maintaining that he was a viable candidate.
In an interview, Li described Harris’s actions as part of a carefully managed political strategy. “It was all a charade,” she said, commenting on Harris’s behavior during this tumultuous period. “She was essentially auditioning for Biden’s endorsement while telling her staff to avoid any talk of her stepping in.” This insight, along with her experiences leading up to Biden’s campaign suspension, is detailed in her book, “Unburdened.”
Li, who had a prominent role in fundraising for both Biden and Harris, revealed that even those closest to Biden had recognized the inevitable halt of his campaign, especially after a problematic debate in 2024.
Following Biden’s announcement not to seek reelection, Harris quickly began reaching out within party circles to consolidate support, implying that she had Biden’s backing. Li noted that Harris was quite flattering to those around her during this time, which helped her gain traction swiftly. “The first 24 hours were a very intensive charm offensive on her part,” Li recalled.
Interestingly, although Biden endorsed Harris shortly after announcing his departure from the race, he seemed hesitant to do so initially, leaving some observers puzzled about the timing and nature of his support.
Li highlighted instances where donors expressed skepticism about Harris’s narrative. She shared a specific call where Harris insisted there was no chance Biden would withdraw, just days before he ultimately did. “A lot of us were just saying it felt like a waste of time. They knew it was fake,” Li remarked, referencing the reactions of wealthy donors who felt misled about Biden’s condition and capabilities.
