Kamala Harris Discusses Debate Preparations Against Trump

In her recent book, “107 Days,” former Vice President Kamala Harris shared insights into how she prepared for her debate against Donald Trump during the 2024 election cycle. Among the strategies, she mentioned tackling some rather crude virtual attacks regarding abortion and Viagra.

Harris likened herself to a “wartime consiglière,” suggesting that her legal background and the support of her advisors bolstered her confidence. She was gearing up to debate JD Vance before President Joe Biden opted out of the race in July 2024.

While honing her understanding of contentious topics, she noted, “I was trained for the painful issue of imagining what kind of personal attacks Trump would get against me.” It seemed like a lot of mental preparation was necessary, especially thinking about the very personal nature of Trump’s potential questions.

One advisor pointed out, “He might ask if you’ve ever had an abortion.” Harris responded thoughtfully, reinforcing the idea that such personal matters were not relevant to their debate. “If he does that, it’s not your business and that’s not what we’re here,” she emphasized.

Another suggested, “If he gets that personal, you should ask if he took Viagra.” The conversation highlighted how they strategized against personal attacks, even though eventual questions about abortion didn’t lead to those kinds of confrontations.

In her analysis, Harris remarked, “In the end, he didn’t go down that track. He probably knew that such a question would be very thin ice for him and would infuriate almost every woman in America.” She mentioned that her team prepared a discussion card to address various nuances, indicating how seriously they took the potential for heated exchanges.

In her candid reflection, she explained, “I’m not a trained seal. I’m not going to remember and spit out the lines. I have to understand the logic and components of every argument, so I can clearly present it and give it a compelling advocacy.”

The book, released on Tuesday, encapsulates the 107 days she spent campaigning after Biden withdrew due to concerns about his mental clarity. Ultimately, Harris garnered enough support to defeat Trump despite challenges in battleground states during the election.
