Kamala Harris Backs Zoran Mamdani in NYC Mayoral Race
Kamala Harris, who ran for president and lost in 2024, expressed her support for Zoran Mamdani, a Democratic candidate for mayor of New York City, during an interview on Monday.
In an appearance on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show,” Harris emphasized that Mamdani should be “supported.” This statement came as she promoted her new book, “107 Days.” She noted that while Mamdani is significant, he isn’t the only noteworthy figure in the party.
“He’s a Democratic candidate, and he deserves support,” Harris mentioned. When asked directly about her backing of Mamdani, her response was affirmative. She added, “I support Democrats in the race, but let’s be clear—he’s not the only star.” Harris pointed out that there are many important candidates running for various offices, not just the mayoral position.
She remarked, “I hope that in our focus on New York City, we haven’t overlooked the many talented individuals vying for mayor and other roles—governors and more. We have a diverse group of excellent candidates.” Harris reiterated that the party encompasses a wide range of “stars.”
This interview marked Harris’ first significant television appearance following her defeat to President Trump in 2024.
Notably, some high-profile Democrats have yet to endorse Mamdani, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. New York State Democratic Committee Chairman Jay Jacobs notably declined to back Mamdani, citing a strong opposition to the candidate’s views on Israel.
On the other hand, Mamdani has garnered support from several prominent Democrats, including New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Representative Jerry Nadler.
His campaign has faced criticism from both sides regarding his socialist views and his stance on issues related to Israel.
Mamdani’s team has not provided comments in response to requests for further information.
