Kamala Harris Signed Letter to Support the Senate Filibuster in 2017

Vice President Kamala Harris signaled this week that she wants to end the Senate filibuster. Roe v. Wade This completely reverses the 2017 pledge to preserve the Senate filibuster.

As Breitbart News reported on Tuesday, Sen. Kamala Harris appeared on Wisconsin Public Radio on Tuesday and called for “an end to the legislative filibuster in the Senate to enact abortion rights and repeal state pro-life laws.”

“I think we should abolish the filibuster. egg“It's about actually restoring laws that protect reproductive freedom and the ability of every person, every woman, to make decisions about their own body and not have the government dictate to them,” Harris said.

This marks yet another reversal of Harris' previous position, after she signed a letter in 2017 pledging to support the Senate filibuster, as shared on social media by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Alaska).

The letter, addressed to then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), called for maintaining “the existing rules, practices and traditions regarding Members' rights to engage in lengthy debate on bills in the United States Senate.”

“Senators have expressed differing views about the appropriateness of limiting debate when considering judicial and executive branch nominations,” the letter states. “Notwithstanding past differences on this issue, we are united in our commitment to preserve Senators' ability to engage in extended debate while bills are on the Senate floor.” It continues:

We recognize the unique role the Senate plays in the legislative process and are resolutely committed to ensuring that this great American institution continues to serve as the world's premier deliberative forum. Therefore, we ask that you join us in opposing any efforts to limit Senators' existing rights and privileges to engage in full, vigorous, and lengthy debate as we consider bills in future Congresses.

Harris then reversed that stance during the 2020 presidential election, calling for an end to the filibuster in order to pass her radical Green New Deal.
