Kamala Harris to Unveil More Policies After Releasing Soviet-Style Schemes

Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris is set to release more information on her economic policy on Wednesday, after coming under fire for releasing a Soviet-style proposal in August, according to three people familiar with the matter. The Washington Post.

Harris faces challenges from the economy, particularly rising costs, which have risen about 20 percent across the board since she took office in 2021.

Harris cannot campaign on cutting rising costs without undermining the Biden-Harris administration's policies, but she needs to tout the administration's policies to make the case for her record and the legitimacy of her candidacy.

CNN's Dana Bash exposed Harris's conundrum in her first pre-recorded interview: She took responsibility for the Biden-Harris administration's economic performance while simultaneously criticizing Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. The contradiction was stark, forcing Harris to promote the administration's policies to justify her candidacy while undermining her own record and candidacy.

Still, Ms. Harris must propose economic policies, and in August she said she would implement price controls to curb what she sees as inflationary price gouging caused by her administration's spending.

A June poll from Monmouth University found that 87% of Americans believe the Biden-Harris administration's policies have had either a negative impact or no impact on inflation.

The first debate with the former president is just days away. Donald TrumpHarris is seeking to contrast her Republican opponent's calls. Lowering the corporate tax rateAlong with the tax proposal, campaign advisers have also discussed plans to shore up the safety net, such as expanding child care and paid leave, but it is unclear whether those or other policies will be included in Wednesday's announcement, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details that have not yet been made public.

The plan will help clarify Harris' economic policy vision as her team works at breakneck speed to put together a presidential campaign since President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. Harris has so far primarily sought to maintain the overall direction of Biden's policies, which have embraced more federal intervention in the economy than his recent Democratic predecessors supported. Harris' first economic policy proposal, released last month, struck a populist tone and called for large new housing subsidies, a $6,000 child allowance for newborns, and the first federal ban on price gouging in the food and beverage sector.

It's unclear whether Harris's overall vision for the national tax system will be detailed in the upcoming policy announcement. Her campaign has previously told reporters that she supports the roughly $5 trillion tax plan outlined in the White House budget proposal. Some of her outside advisers have urged Harris to include proposals for millionaire and corporate tax increases that Biden previously supported.
