Kamala Harris’s Campaign Attacks JD Vance for Supporting Child Tax Credits

Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign appears to be attacking former President Donald Trump’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), for his support for expanding and making permanent the child tax credit.

“J.D. Vance’s attacks on childfree Americans are even more vile. He has called for higher taxes on people without children,” Harris’ emergency director, Ammar Moosa, wrote to X, referring to Vance’s longtime support of the child tax credit and extending its benefits to American parents.

Harris’ campaign’s X account Posts Footage shows Vance saying he supports expanding the child tax credit to ease the tax burden for American families, including large families.

“If you make $100,000 a year, $400,000 a year, and you have three kids, you should pay a different, lower tax rate than if you make the same amount and don’t have kids,” Vance said in an interview with Charlie Kirk in 2021. “And that’s it.”

As part of the attack, the Harris campaign’s X account also attacked Vance for his support of expanding the child tax credit.

“JD Vance says we should raise taxes on childless adults because we should ‘punish what we think is wrong,'” the account wrote on X. Expanding the child tax credit does not raise taxes on childless Americans.

Vance responded by pointing out that expanding the child tax credit is typically a bipartisan effort — and that it has been supported by Senate Democrats, including Harris, so far.

“A majority of Americans from both political parties support the child tax credit and reducing the tax burden for parents,” Vance wrote on X. “It’s disturbing to see Kamala’s campaign take such an extreme position with its extreme anti-family policies.”

The Trump campaign and conservatives also responded to the attack.

Earlier this year, Rep. Jason Smith (R-Missouri) and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) Laid out An expansion of the child tax credit, which would adjust the credit for inflation. At the time, Vance signaled his support for the framework.

“We are a family party…actually [have] “Family-oriented policies” and Vance Said“If we’re going to raise kids in this country, we should make it easier to raise them, not harder. Unfortunately, it’s too expensive and too hard.”

Sen. Vance and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) have been influential in mainstreaming the idea of expanding the child tax credit among Republicans.

Vance has also sounded the alarm about America’s declining birthrate and advocated for fiscal policies that would help boost the U.S. birth rate — another bipartisan issue.

“We should be concerned that many indicators of family formation, fertility and family health are collapsing in America,” Vance said. Said in 2021. “…We should give resources to parents who are thinking about having children. We should make it easier to raise an American family. And we should send a message to the culture that we are a party that values families and we’re going to back that up with actual policies.”
